The NESE curriculum is divided into 10 levels of intensive instruction. In each level, you attend classes every day from either 9:00 - 3:15 every day (the Intensive Program) or from 9:00-12:30 (the Semi-Intensive Program). Additionally, depending on your goals and needs, you may attend some of the elective and after-school courses that we offer.
When you arrive at NESE, you will be given a complete assessment to determine your levels in all the skill areas. The results of this assessment might indicate that you need to be placed into a different level for each skill, and the NESE curriculum easily accommodates that possibility. For example, if you can speak better than you can write, you will be placed into a higher level for speaking and a lower level for writing. Whichever your skill level, you can be certain that by the time you complete NESE’s most advanced level, you will be able to speak English with the fluency necessary to pursue your academic and professional goals successfully.
If you arrive at NESE with minimal knowledge, it will take approximately one year to complete the entire curriculum. If you already have some knowledge of English, we will place you into a level that ensures that you will learn English in the shortest possible time.
Although you are required to have textbooks for classes, and you will be given homework from them, you should be prepared for much more! In class, you will read newspapers and magazines, watch videos, role-play, do exercises in the computer lab, and interview Americans. The NESE curriculum is designed to give you maximum exposure to authentic materials as soon as possible. The result: you learn English as quickly as possible.
In addition to NESE’s intensive curriculum, we offer the following elective courses designed to help you accomplish your specific goals:
The super-intensive course is designed to ensure that you will significantly increase your score on the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® exam. In class, you will receive an in-depth skill review, learn test-taking techniques, and take many practice exams to give you confidence when taking the iBT Next Generation TOEFL® exam. Because the classes are small, you will have an opportunity to concentrate on your own particular mistakes and improve your score. The Institutional TOEFL® exam is offered every month at NESE to all interested intermediate and advanced level students.
In this intensive course, case studies and current domestic and international business situations are presented.
Through texts, videos, and discussions, you will sharpen and refine your English language and business skills
in areas such as business writing, marketing, strategic planning, finance, international business, and human
resource development. The Harvard Management Update, Business Week, journal articles, and case studies as
well as other current media are used throughout this class. Because NESE maintains special relationships with
a number of MBA programs around the country, NESE students who are academically qualified can enter a
number of these programs without taking the official TOEFL® exam.
This course will teach you how to prepare research and technical papers, theses, and dissertations to a standard expected by United States universities. You will learn how to use an American university library for research purposes, and these skills will help you complete your class assignment: a research paper complete with footnotes and bibliography.
This course is designed to give you extra practice and more self-confidence in conversations in both formal and informal situations. A special emphasis is placed on the needs of each individual in the group.
In this course, you will be introduced to the American judicial and legislative systems. You will become familiar with legal terminology, learn how to analyze cases, and also understand how legal documents are composed. In addition, you will view actual court proceedings through visiting real court rooms and watching videos.
